Brighton Pavilion

Brighton & Hove City Council’s concept of a shared space at Pavilion Grounds, New Road in Brighton has transformed a traditional, motorist dominated street scene into one where pedestrians are able to move freely over the whole area and have priority over vehicles.

The Council consulted heavily with local people during the design process so that the scheme would improve the experience for all users.

The inclusion within the design of attractive features such as bespoke hardwood seating provided by Woodscape as well as lighting has improved the experience of many people who use the area.

Woodscape were commissioned to provide the bespoke street furniture which was installed adjacent to the Theatre Royal Pavilion, providing theatre-goers and other visitors with a place to rest, whilst reflecting the artistic nature of the area.

Woodscape designed a range of percher-style and long satellite seating, working in conjunction with artists, Brighton & Hove Council and a team of architects and engineers.

The seating features long slats as well as a spectacular array of small, coloured inset lights that are computer managed to complement the mood of the season or play being staged at the theatre.

Since its opening, the street has become well-used and a centrepiece of the city’s Cultural Quarter. There is now a new café culture with a lively, welcoming atmosphere and the area has become pedestrian friendly both during the day and in the evening.

The redevelopment scheme has also received numerous awards including a Civic Trust Award.
