Bespoke hardwood benches in Park Bolton

Woodscape were commissioned to design and manufacture contemporary street furniture which were to be aesthetically in-keeping with Queens Park, after Bolton Council were granted Heritage Lottery Funding through their ‘Parks for People’ project to revamp the Victorian park – which first opened in 1814. The project involved designing and creating bespoke hardwood seating, a bridge and other external structures to enhance the park’s landscape scheme.

Located just outside the city centre, Queens Park is one of the largest in Bolton as well as one of the most popular – featuring extensive playgrounds and woodlands. Originally named after the Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, there are many original architectural features in the historical landscaping which give it a unique feel. Home to Bolton’s first Natural History Museum (now demolished), the park features mature trees, flowerbeds, duck ponds and statues – including one of former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.

In the initial stages, Woodscape focused on refurbishing an original bridge over the River Croal – which runs through the park. Various components were manufactured in Naturally Very Durable Hardwood including decking with anti-slip Carborundum inserts in order to ensure maximum safety for visitors to the park in all weather conditions. In addition, the hardwood bearers and handrail sections where manufactured and installed. The high quality and durability of the timber means that as well as being in keeping with its landscaped surroundings, it will mature slowly and beautifully.

Another part of the project was the creation of a timber podium on the mound which overlooks the park and two Hardwood Boom gates were manufactured and installed for pedestrian access and vehicle prevention into the park.

The final phase of the project involved the design and manufacture of six custom Hardwood seats that were contemporary in style. Featuring a slatted seat-top, like many of Woodscape’s Contemporary seating range, as well as Trickstoppa Skateboarding Fixes and a backrest with Powder-Coated and Galvanised Mild Steel skirt and supports.

The collection of Naturally Very Durable Hardwood seating and external structures supplied to Queens Park by Woodscape has contributed to its overall revitalisation, making it an attractive urban park which will be enjoyed by the community for decades to come.
