Castle Street is the civic heart of Liverpool and the historic centre of the city. It runs between the old site of the Medieval castle and the Georgian Town Hall and is part of Liverpool’s UNESCO World Maritime Heritage Site.
The Castle Street conservation area includes a large concentration of superb historical and listed architecture with differing uses including restaurants, Council offices and other businesses.
This public realm project, comissioned by Liverpool City Council, sought to conserve and enhance the character of the streetscape whilst making a more exciting and accessible environment – both day and night for tourists and local workers.
The main aim was to provide a safe pedestrian dominated space which could be closed to traffic from time to time for festivals and other events in the city.

Woodscape designed and manufactured a series of bespoke timber and stainless steel street furniture, ensuring all elements of the scheme reflected the civic grandeur of the street.
The public furniture was designed and created using Naturally Very Durable Hardwood for its aesthetic, durable and long-lasting properties.
Castle Street is of great historical importance to the City of Liverpool as the home of the Town Hall and with many fine historical listed buildings. With the Cavern Club, a Beatles’ tourist attraction close by, it is enticing even more visitors to enjoy the renovated public space.
The regeneration has also made it more attractive place to live, work and invest in the area.
