Scarborough Harbourside

Woodscape Loafer Seats provide a strong architectural statement for Scarborough’s historic harbourside regeneration project.

LDA Design were commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council and Yorkshire Forward – a regional development agency, charged with improving the Yorkshire and Humber economy, to redesign Scarborough’s harbourside. It was the first in a number of projects to regenerate the ailing seaside resort.

Woodscape were commissioned to provide street furniture to aid the regeneration of the harbour with the specific aim to change its perceived image of a run-down, road-dominated thoroughfare to that of an attractive place for the locals and visitors to sit and linger in order to enjoy the seaside frontage.

Woodscape created innovative timber seating, a fisherman’s lock-up and a bus stop for the town’s historic fishing harbour, using Naturally Very Durable Hardwood to enable the designs to withstand the coastal environment and heavy usage.

The large Loafer Seat design, which was produced in various sizes for the project, is now widely considered as beautiful and sculptural piece, as well an extremely functional and practical product.

The benches vary in length from 5m to 20m and were supplied in modular kit form for on-site assembly. The seats were also manufactured with specially engineered components manufactured in Marine Grade Stainless Steel.

Completed in 2007, the harbourside regeneration has indeed attracted many businesses and the town has seen millions of pounds of private investment since its completion – including a number of restaurants and eateries, which have taken the opportunity to offer their customers a table with a stunning view.
