DDA Compliance : Designing for Disability

Woodscape can only advise on general compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) and we recommend you undertake your own checks and research prior to ordering your chosen product specification.

Bespoke Design

All Woodscape products can be bespoked to your needs. Seat height, fixings, safety signage and more. As such, it’s difficult for us to advise on the DDA compliance of a specific product, but simple for us to customise a product to be compliant with any specifications you provide.

Positioning

The location of fixed seating, bollards, litter bins and other items within pedestrian zones should be carefully considered against the recommendations in the DDA, such as placing roadside items 500mm from the kerb, and takes into account access routes and general boundaries particularly as you would wish them to be recognised by the visually impaired.

Visual Clarity

It is recommend that street furniture has a strong visual presence / profile. Our robust timber construction is ideal for this, and can be easily customised to have bold or reflective signage and high visibility banding

Dimensions

Recommendations vary depending on the specific usage and product, but for standard seating a seat height
of between 450mm and 500mm is typically used when limited mobility is a concern, perch style seating being recommended at around 700mm, and bollards should extend at least 1000mm above ground for maximum visibilty.

Weather and Wear & Tear

Seating surfaces should be of a material or slanted design that discourages the pooling of rainwater, and material choice should allow for maintenance when damage or vandalism occurs. The bespoke nature of our products combined with being manufactured using naturally very durable hardwood makes them the ideal solution.
