Characteristics of NVD Hardwood

We specialise in is a Naturally Very Durable Hardwood. Timber is classified in five broad categories based on their performance in ground contact. Timbers in the Naturally Very Durable category have a life expectancy, without preservative treatment, of more than 100 years in UK ground contact for section sizes of 200mm upwards. These timbers are usually very hard, extremely strong and have good fire and chemical resistance.

Dense Very Durable Hardwood in large sections seasons slowly over a number of years. During the acclimatisation process cracks/checks may appear, especially during periods of hot dry weather. These are more noticeable early in the seasoning cycle, than after indepth equalisation of moisture content has taken place.

Hardwood timber is a natural product subject to movement due to this acclimatisation.

For a few months after installation especially during hot/dry weather regular wetting may assist this gradual acclimatisation.

Hardwood Timber Lifespan

Naturally Very Durable Hardwood is the most dense timber commercially available, a 2” x 2” section will last in excess of 40 years in ground contact, so longevity of component performing within the characteristics should not be an issue.

Unlike preservative treated softwoods, the durability of NVD Hardwood is throughout the full section and any moisture ingress would not normally result in internal decay.

As hardwood timber is a natural product, any warranty claims relating to timber condition will be considered on this basis.

Where a timber has been utilised in accordance with client requirements that falls outside of our preferred range of NVDH timbers, Woodscape can accept no responsibility for the lifespan of these timbers.

Colour Variations

As a natural product, hardwood timber is subject to colour variation across pieces, sections and species. All components will fade to a silvery-grey colour over time, as such colour variations at time of supply are not considered a defect.

To give a measure of pre-installation protection against soiling most components are finished with one coat of Sadolin Industrial 94 Mais (or suitable alternative). This is not a colour stain or preservative, and will gradually fade away to allow the timber to weather naturally.

Application of alternative treatments or coatings due to Buyer specification either during manufacture or after installation is at the Buyer’s risk.

Manufacturing

Defects appearing to be from manufacturing issues that arise during the first 3 months following delivery, subject to examination to confirm that they are not related to wear & tear or third-party damage, will be remedied at no cost to the buyer.

Metalwork finishes, Electricals

Our furniture often incorporates other materials that will affect the above, the design life can only be governed by the lowest performing component and any warranties/ Guarantees are those offered by component suppliers.

Tannin

All hardwoods exude tannin as part of the natural weathering process, when certain tannins (particularly Oak) come into contact with ferrous particles they can react and create a blue/black ink type stain. This is perfectly normal and can be removed with standard household detergents/bleach. For more stubborn stains an Oxalic Acid based product can be used.

Damage through Use
